SOSAKU HANGA (1904-)
The Sosaku hanga or creative print movement in the early 20th century advocated that to be "art," the woodbock print must be self-drawn (jiga), self-carved (jioku), and self-printed (jizuri) with the desire of expressing the self. The beginning of the creative print movement was signaled by Kanae Yamamoto, who released his entirely self-produced print Gyofu ("Fisherman") in the Magazine Myojo in 1904, and in 1907 created the first magazine for sosaku hanga artists called Hosun or "Little Thing". Other prominent artists of the sosaku hanga genre are, Onichi Koshiro, Hiratsuka Unichi, Toshi Yoshida, Yamaguchi Gen, Sekino Junichiro, Munakata Shiko, Kiyoshi Saito, Umetaro Azechi, Watanabe Sadao, and Haku Maki among others.
