About Chokosai Eisho (1789-1817)
Eisho worked primarily in the 1790s. His innovations in technique were in his bust portraits of beautiful girls. His women lack the aristocratic refinement of his teacher, Eishi's, but they are more human, more lifelike; the sweetly childish, slightly silly look on the faces of his courtesans mirrors, perhaps unconsciously, mirrors one strong element of personality found in the Edo courtesan quarter at the height of ukiyo-e.
