About Eishosai Choki (active 1786 to 1808)
Choki, like Utamaro, was a pupil of Toriyama Sekien. In Choki's portraiture of the courtesans of the late 18th century we can perceive myriad sources of influence; Kiyonaga, Eishi, Sharaku, Utamaro, and indirectly, but perhaps strongest of all, Harunobu. The wonder of it is that , although Choki was not the equal of any of the artists he studied, in a number of his finest prints he somehow surpassed them all in the evocation of poetic atmosphere and in the creation of an ideal of feminine beauty that is second to none in ukiyo-e
