Notes: Tamami Shima is one of only a few female Japanese woodblock artists to work in the sosaku hanga tradition in the mid-20th century.

About Tamami Shima (1937-1999)

Tamami Shma was a native of Hirosaki in the Aomori prefecture of Japan, and graduated from the Women's Collecge of Fine Arts in 1958. Her work is known for is integration of the wood grain of the blocks into her designs, much like her contemporary Kiyoshi Saito. Her prints often show landscapes including birds or horses.
