YOSHIDA, WHICH IS THE PRESENT DAY TOYOHASHI, was in Hokusai's time not only a stop on the Tokaido, but a fairly important castle town. In the Fifty-three Stages of the Tokaido Hiroshige showed both the castle and the bridge across the Toyokawa River, but Hokusai has omitted the local color and shown us a teahouse that might have been almost anywhere within seeing distance of Fuji. The name of this establishment, like that of many others along the Tokaido, is Fuji View (Fujimi), and the artist has appropriately made the mountain visible through a window.

The picture is similar in style and coloring to "The Sazai Hall of the Temple of the Five Hundred Arhats" (no. 7 in this series), though the people are somewhat larger and more freely posed. The seated woman on the right might well be enlarged into an ukiyoe portrait. Though known today primarily for his landscapes, Hokusai was also a competent master of the bijinga (literally, "picture of beautiful woman"), ne of the favorite idioms of his day.

The markings on the round hats by the right doorpost represent the name and trademark of Hokusai's publisher, Eijudo. Advertising of this sort was often incorporated into Edo-period prints.

The signature is " Iitsu, the former Hokusai."
