SAKURAJIMA VOLCANO is one of the most active volcanoes in Japan with major eruptions in 1914 and 1947. It still spews ash and often has a steam cloud near the top. Situated in South Kyushu, the acivity of Sakurajima volcano started approximately 13,000 years ago and continues today. Great eruptions in recorded history took place in 1471, 1779 and 1914. Lava flows in the 1914 eruption piled up a channel over 1,300 feet wide and connected the volcano with Osumi Peninsula. The current summit activity began in 1955 and more than 7,300 explosive eruptions have been recorded in the past 50 years.
